OpenAlice Research and Analysis Module: Cross-Asset Market Data, Fundamentals, and News in One Place

OpenAlice Research and Analysis Module: Cross-Asset Market Data, Fundamentals, and News in One Place

6 min read

In trading, research is the foundation of every decision.

The problem is that research has been fragmented across tools — price data in one place, earnings reports in another, news in a third, technical indicators requiring a fourth tool or manual calculation. Just piecing that information together can eat up the time that should go toward actually thinking.

OpenAlice chose to integrate research and analysis directly into the conversational interface. This article walks you through what the research module can do and how to actually use it.

Technical Architecture: TypeScript-native OpenBB

OpenAlice's market data engine is a TypeScript-native OpenBB implementation, running in-process — no additional service setup or environment configuration needed.

OpenBB is an open-source financial data platform that integrates a wide range of data sources: stocks, crypto, commodities, forex, macroeconomic indicators. OpenAlice wraps it in so you can access all that data through conversation, without writing OpenBB calls yourself.

Supported asset classes:

Asset Class Coverage
Equity (Stocks) Deepest — includes technical indicators, fundamentals, earnings, insider trading
Cryptocurrency Price data, technical indicators
Commodity Price data, major contracts
Currency/Forex Major currency pairs
Macro Interest rates, CPI, GDP, employment data, etc.

OpenAlice provides a unified cross-asset symbol search — you don't need to know the exact ticker format each asset uses across different data sources.

Practical examples:

# Stocks
What's the current price of AAPL?
Show me TSLA's price over the past 6 months

# Crypto
What's BTC/USD trading at?
Show me ETH price history for the last 30 days

# Forex
What's the current EUR/USD rate?

# Macro
What's the current US 10-year treasury yield?
Show me recent CPI data for the US

Ask these questions directly in conversation. OpenAlice will call the appropriate data source, retrieve the data, and format it into something readable.

Technical Indicators: Excel-Formula-Style Syntax

OpenAlice has a technical indicator calculator designed with Excel-formula-style syntax, making it easy for non-engineers to understand and use.

You can ask it to calculate directly in conversation:

Calculate RSI(14) for NVDA over the past 60 days
Show me MACD for AAPL (12, 26, 9)
What's the 50-day and 200-day moving average for SPY?
Is TSLA overbought based on Bollinger Bands?

You can also combine multiple indicators for cross-validation:

Show me NVDA's RSI and volume together for the past month,
is there any divergence?

For these kinds of questions, the AI will retrieve the data, calculate the indicators, and then interpret them in natural language — not just throwing numbers at you, but telling you what those numbers point toward.

Fundamental Research: Earnings, Ratios, Earnings Calls

OpenAlice's stock fundamental coverage includes:

  • Company overview — description, sector classification, market cap, core business
  • Financial statements — income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement
  • Financial ratios — P/E, P/B, EV/EBITDA, ROE, ROA, gross margin, and more
  • Earnings calendar — upcoming earnings dates
  • Insider trading — insider buy/sell records
  • Market anomalies — unusual volume or price movement

Practical query examples:

# Earnings summary
Give me NVDA's latest quarterly earnings summary

# Valuation comparison
Compare P/E ratio of AAPL, MSFT, and GOOGL

# Financial health
What's AMD's debt-to-equity ratio and free cash flow trend?

# Insider activity
Are there any notable insider buys for META recently?

# Earnings calendar
When is NVDA's next earnings report?

These answers may not be real-time data (depending on data source update frequency), but for medium-to-long-term research purposes they're more than sufficient.

OpenAlice continuously collects RSS feed news in the background. You can search the archive with three commands:

globNews → global search (across all collected feeds)
grepNews → keyword matching search
readNews → read the full text of a specific article

In conversation, you can ask:

# Search by topic
What are the latest news about Federal Reserve interest rate policy?

# Search by company
Show me recent news about TSMC

# Search by event
Any news about US-China trade tensions this week?

What makes this feature special: it's not doing live news fetches — there's a continuously running background collector, which makes search significantly faster. If you set up a Heartbeat (covered in the next article), it can also proactively notify you when news matches specific keywords you care about.

Combined Research: Let AI Connect Multiple Data Points

The most valuable part of research and analysis isn't looking at a single indicator in isolation — it's seeing multiple dimensions of data together. OpenAlice's advantage here is clear: you can ask a single question that pulls from multiple data sources at once:

Is NVDA worth entering a position right now?
Give me analysis from technical, fundamental, and recent news angles

Or more specifically:

Compare NVDA and AMD:
- Technical: RSI, moving averages
- Fundamental: P/E, revenue growth, margins
- Recent news: any material events in the past 2 weeks
Give me a relative strength assessment

The AI will pull all that data, organize it, and give you a structured analysis — not telling you "buy or sell" (that decision is still yours), but formatting the data into something you can quickly evaluate.

The Reality of Data Coverage

A few boundaries that you'll only know by testing:

Non-US markets: OpenBB coverage depends on which data sources are connected, and some features may be limited. Test the specific markets you care about to confirm which queries work.

Real-time vs. delayed data: Most free data sources have 15-20 minute delays. That's not enough for day trading, but generally acceptable for medium-to-long-term research. If you need real-time data, you'll need to connect paid data sources.

Data source update frequency: Earnings data takes time to update after calls, and insider trading records have regulatory filing delays — these are regulatory delays, not tool limitations.

What the Research Module Is Actually For

OpenAlice's research and analysis tools are positioned as: letting you complete "decide whether something is worth researching further" inside the conversation, not replacing deep-dive due diligence.

It helps you quickly run through price action, technical picture, and fundamental outline — then if a name is genuinely worth digging into, you know which direction to go. If not, you've saved twenty minutes of opening different tabs and piecing information together.

That's where the efficiency lives.
